On February 6, students from the Fysisch-Mathematische Faculteitsvereniging (FMF) at University of Groningen came to ARCNL to visit labs, talk to researchers and learn about opportunities for students to get involved in cutting-edge research.

At the start of the afternoon, institute manager Marjan Fretz gave a brief introduction to ARCNL research and its motivations, encouraging the physics and mathematics students to find out more during the lab tours and poster session to follow. Splitting into groups, the students visited the labs of four of ARCNL’s research groups. They were very curious about the equipment, chatting with researchers about how different parts of the experiment setups work and drawing on knowledge from their courses.

After visiting the labs, the students took part in a poster session, where they talked to researchers about the wide array of projects at ARCNL. They were especially interested in hearing about how students get involved in research projects, as well as how fundamental research translates to real-world applications.

Both the students and the researchers enjoyed the exchange, which was full of thoughtful questions about physics and diverse perspectives on conducting research.
