NWO has awarded three talented female scientists a WISE grant. Dr. Liubov Amitonova has received an appointment at the Advanced Research Centre for Nanolithography (ARCNL), Dr. Julia Engelmann at the National Institute for Subatomic Physics (Nikhef) and Dr. Sarah Caudill at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). With the WISE program, NWO wants to encourage the recruitment and promotion of top women researchers at its institutes.

Amitonova is currently a postdoctoral researcher with a NWO veni-grant at VU University, where she studies advanced manipulation and propagation of light for imaging, endoscopy, metrology and quantum communication. At ARCNL she will start a new research group on computational imaging, complementary to the current lines of research at ARCNL. Her group will make use of modern wavefront shaping techniques, new approaches towards applications of multimode optical fibers and new compressive sensing techniques and apply all of these in the context of advanced sensing and imaging.

About the WISE program
NWO tries to offer all talented researchers the opportunity to excel. To improve the gender balance among its research personnel, NWO decided in 2015 to establish a tenure-track program for female researchers at NWO institutes, Women In Science Excel (WISE). This program seeks to recruit and facilitate the promotion of female talent, by offering them the possibility to develop an own research group or to continue such a research group at one of the NWO institutes.
