ARCNL and ASML renew collaboration at yearly Strategy Day
Last Thursday, researchers and leadership from ARCNL, ASML and university stakeholders congregated in Eindhoven to look back on the past year of collaborative innovation, and to look forward to what’s to come. In coming together for this Strategy Day, the participants set the stage for the coming year of the public-private partnership.
Strategy Day for academia-industry alignment

The yearly Strategy Day was born out of a need to align the priorities of ARCNL as a fundamental research institute, affiliated universities as stakeholders and ASML as a private company. In research, a 5-year project is nothing odd, but for a company like ASML, development goals can change on a much faster scale. By meeting yearly to discuss the progress and planning of ARCNL research projects, both parties can align their expectations regarding support for research projects and the timeframe of results.
“Strategy Day is about being open and direct between ARCNL and the stakeholders, particularly ASML,” says ARCNL director Wim van der Zande. “The conclusion is clear: the most important aspect remains clear and open communication!”
The event features plenary talks from both ARCNL and ASML, sharing highlights, lowlights, and outlook. In the afternoon break-out sessions, researchers from ARCNL meet one-on-one with their ASML counterparts to exchange ideas within their specific research areas. This way, the research goals of ARCNL and ASML remain closely linked.
ARCNL in transition
Among the guests at this strategy meeting was Marcelo Ackermann, who was recently announced as the new director of ARCNL starting this November. As a professor with previous ties to ASML, Marcelo’s commitment to academic-industrial partnerships is what Strategy Day is all about.
“I loved to observe the close collaboration and open exchange between ASML and ARCNL in defining the key research topics for the future,” shares Marcelo. “This is really an exemplary way of doing public-private collaboration for fundamental and applied research!”
His participation in this meeting contributes to a smooth transition in institute leadership as ARCNL welcomes another 10 years of collaboration with industry stakeholders such as ASML.
