Unique opportunities for Wetenschapsdag visitors
Once a year, ARCNL opens its doors wide to welcome a diverse group of visitors. The event, called Wetenschapsdag, is organized in collaboration with various research organizations at Amsterdam Science Park. This year, the Wetenschapsdag took place on Saturday, October 5th.
On the Wetenschapsdag, ARCNL opens its labs. These are usually accessible only to researchers working within them, making this event a unique opportunity. ARCNL has some fascinating facilities, such as the lab where researchers use highly advanced equipment to produce extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light. The ultrashort wavelengths of EUV light enable the creation of incredibly small structures, like the transistors in our cell phones. However, producing EUV light comes with significant challenges. Researchers in Oscar Versolato’s group study the fundamental processes involved, aiming to deepen understanding and explore ways to make the process more sustainable.
Families with children can also enjoy engaging workshops during the Wetenschapsdag. For example, ARCNL researchers guide children in creating their own light instruments, which they can take home to explore light sources. Another hands-on activity is led by Bart Weber’s group, where children experiment with friction, allowing them to observe its effects firsthand.
Visitors are also welcome to stroll through the central hallway to get an overview of ARCNL’s scientific activities through demonstrations or attend presentations in the lecture room.
Each year, the Wetenschapsdag attracts new visitors, many of whom come from the part of Amsterdam where ARCNL is located. At the same time, we also welcome many returning visitors exploring activities they missed previously.
